Piano Keys & Parts
The acoustic upright piano is an amazing instrument with well over 12.000 parts. Built like a case consisting of two solid wooden side panels, with heavy supporting beams in the back, where the soundboard rests and the frame is attached. Soundboard, frame, and strings run vertically, perpendicular to the keyboard, thus taking up less floor space than a normal grand piano. Upright pianos are made in various heights and are generally considered to have a slightly inferior tone resulting from the shortness of their strings and their relatively small soundboards. The action (hammer and damper mechanism) of the upright differs from the grand-piano action mainly in that upright action is returned to a resting position by means of springs rather than by gravity alone, as in a grand piano. This, in part, accounts for the characteristic “touch” of uprights, which is distinct from that of grands. The main advantages of upright pianos lie in their modest price and compactness; they are instruments for home and school.
Explaining the actual moving parts.
The piano action, a marvelous work of engineering developed over centuries with important design improvement to create the Piano we have nowadays.
When you press the key, the action must throw the hammer towards the struck string but at the same time it must recoil immediately after hitting the string.
After the hammer bounces off the string, it will rebound back up towards the string, otherwise it may damp out the sound. So, the hammer must move faster than the pressed key, so that it is at rest, and ready to hit probably the same string again, if the note is repeated. The hammer must travel a small distance after the key is struck, but still give the pianist a good control of the piano’s dynamics.
All of this in a fraction of a second!
This string hammer action was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori when he created the pianoforte around 1700.
